Welcome to Daniel Paul – Spirit of Africa…
What started out as a “back-up plan” for young Daniel when he left Art School, turned out that he had a raw talent for design and creative productions.
Daniel van Vuuren owner of Daniel Paul Leather – Spirit of Africa in Perth, said he was fortunate enough to have had great teachers to nurture his talent and to learn the fine art and skills to produce high quality leather products at internationally recognised standards.
Daniel started out as an apprentice working for an internationally acclaimed Safari Outfitter in South Africa. After five years of rigorous training, he was advanced to Head of the Leather Department. His role was to design and manufacture high quality leather products and to ensure that every item was produced to the highest standard.
In 2008, Daniel left the company to start his own range – Daniel Paul Leather Crafts. At this point, his former employer offered Daniel sole production of the company’s veg tan product line. For ten years Daniel perfected his art and became well known for quality bespoke leather items.
He was chosen to represent the Eastern Cape and South Africa, with a handful of fellow designers at the well renowned, Ethiopian World Exhibition and Fashion Show in 2018. While many craftsmen prefer to work in isolation, Daniel’s passion led him to train numerous people over the years – instilling his strict work ethics and sharp eye for detail.
After experiencing a harrowing home invasion, Daniel decided to move his family to his mother’s home country, Scotland in 2020.
Since then, Daniel started making leather products from their lounge until he found suitable premises in Perth, opposite St Paul’s Square.
“I believe in perfect timing. I guess when you are an artist, you want to perfect your craft, but I have learned to be patient and to take my time when making major decisions and while crafting a bespoke gift by hand. I love seeing the product come to life. From an idea in your mind, to finding the perfect skin and hand- cutting and stitching it together with thought and precision, making it come to life,”
For over 20 years Daniel Paul has lived, breathed, and practiced this craft. Like Africa, his creations have been through struggles and duress, but its true beauty lies within its rugged strength. Every item has a unique imperfection and that tells the story of its endurance and ability to overcome challenges – transforming it into perfection.
Daniel’s long-term dream is to train up artists like him, who has an affinity to create and to teach them this timeless skill to produce their very own master pieces over time.
You can find Daniel opposite the iconic St Paul’s Square, which recently has been renovated and is now an event’s space for the public to be enjoyed.
